Benatky nad Jizerou (Benatky on the river Jizera) is a small town some 30
miles North East of Prague, the Capital of the recently formed Czech Republic, which was
formerly the larger Communist state of Czechoslovakia. The Town is remarkably similar to
our own town of Bridgnorth (Shropshire). It has a High Town and a Low Town and a river a
little smaller than our Severn. Our link church is a member of the Church of the
Czech Brethren which is the independent evangelical church. This denomination was
given a particularly hard time by the Communists and many of their Pastors were imprisoned
for their faith. The Communist legacy is a Nation that is 85% atheist -
the second most atheistic state in the world. Benatky was also the base for the
Russian Army of Occupation that numbered 100,000 troops. Imagine having them for
neighbours for forty years! Our Link with this precious little Church was set up by
our previous Vicar, John Fieldsend when he revisited his homeland in 1992. Exchange visits
began in 1996 and have proved to be a great blessing. Both Churches have discovered they
have much to learn from each other. Czech hospitality is something to be
savoured.
Many of them speak good or passable English so language is seldom a problem. The return
coach fare from London to Prague is only £65 and air tickets can be as little as £120.
The only expenses incurred out there are usually the cost of souvenirs and postcards home!
The Czechs value these visits very highly and are greatly encouraged by our support
and interest.
The Benatky Link Group meets once a
month throughout the year. We are always pleased to welcome new friends. |
